NMChicago-CampGreyfield.jpg Camp Greyfield Experience Drives Purpose with Learning, Thinking and Doing

Finding purpose in work is driving today’s young professionals, and a new innovative career development program at Northwestern Mutual - Chicago is leading the way. The Chicago-based financial planning firm kicked off its 1872 Leadership Development Program helping guide the financial advisors to understand themselves and know their leadership “why.”

“The 1872 Leadership Development Program is a great way for our financial advisors to define their purpose and discover growth opportunities that are available to them,” said Andrew Higney, chief development officer.  “By first helping them articulate what drives them in their personal and professional lives they have a clearer focus on their leadership “why.”

The firm brought in outside experts that worked with the financial professionals to develop their mission, vision and values.

“Although it was challenging at first, making the time to reflect and think deeper of my purpose, gave me direction and focus,” said Alison Fyhrie, a financial advisor in the firm’s Rosemont district office. “By honing in on what drives me, I have a clearer understanding of what value I bring to my clients and my team,” added Eric Fenton, a financial advisor in the firm’s downtown Chicago office.

While developing your ‘why’ is a first step to building a successful financial planning practice, often what is holding someone back from success is negativity and fear.

”We’re surrounded by negativity, it’s emotional cancer,” said John Wright, founder of Greyfield Legacies. “We created Camp Greyfield to help people take the blinders off, harness change and use it to enhance the quality and focus in their lives.”

Camp Greyfield, a highly-respected learning and training center has welcomed CEOs of Fortune 100 companies, professional athletes and world famous authors to the 80-acre facility in St. Joseph, Illinois. Now, the eight advisors in the 1872 Leadership Development Program took part in the highly-acclaimed program to push through and find true purpose and meaning.

“John is extremely good at building confidence in people and at the same time enhancing their leadership effectiveness that develops skills and drives vision,” said Corey D. McQuade, Managing Partner.

Wright, a former professional football player who built a distinguished career as one of Northwestern Mutual’s leading managing partners, started Greyfield Legacies to show individuals their highest potential and how to achieve it.

Believing firmly that focus follows fun, Wright engages team members in activities at his “field of dreams” performance camp that includes a world-class shooting facility; high ropes challenge course, a football field, golf course, equestrian center, basketball and tennis courts. The activities range from team building to personal growth activities.

For Fyhrie the day meant facing her fear of heights. “I convinced myself that I am tough and I can do this and if not I would go down trying,’ she recalls.  She succeeded in climbing a 30-foot telephone poll.  “We all have natural strengths, but there is something meaningful to be said about pushing through your fears,” added Fyhrie.

For Fenton, the aha moment came climbing 40 feet in the air, and linking hands with Zack Wallace, another team member during a high ropes challenge course. “It was emblematic of the teamwork that goes into building a successful financial planning practice,” he said.

Following the fun, the day ends with an introspective discussion on the strengths participants have as individuals and opportunities for growth.

“Escaping the concrete jungle of downtown Chicago and spending time in nature, being coached by a former professional athlete and respected, successful Northwestern Mutual Managing Partner was a great experience from which I have grown a great deal,” said Fenton.

“The Camp Greyfield experience gave me the confidence to persevere through the valleys, so the path to the peak is clear,” added Fyhrie.

Fyhrie and Fenton are among the financial planning firm’s young aspiring leaders who are learning to lead themselves, lead others, attract and select, and lead a team through the firm’s innovative 1872 Leadership Development Program. Each advisor is building a financial planning practice and discovering their leadership potential whether that be in their own personal practice or leading a larger team of financial professionals. In addition to Fyhrie and Fenton, participants include: Joe Cannon, Taylor Overman, Corey Quaglia, Hayley Tuitman, Chase Vedrode and Zack Wallace.

Northwestern Mutual - Chicago For the fourth consecutive year, the Chicago-based financial planning firm welcomed children ages two to education, service 12 for a day of and fun.

What you do at work and what your kids think you do can be two different things at least, that’s what the financial professionals at Northwestern Mutual – Chicago learned this summer. For the fourth consecutive year, close to 50 children ages two to 12 descended upon the Chicago-based financial planning firm for the annual Bring Your Child to Work Day.

“This is one of our favorite special events that bring together our personal and professional families,” said Nikki Perryman, director of operations. “It’s a great opportunity to plant seeds of knowledge in the next generation on the importance of financial planning, show them different careers paths and help instill the value of helping others.”.

For some kids, the fun part of the day started with the train ride to the office or elevator ride to the 46th floor of UBS Tower, located in the heart of downtown Chicago. Once gathered in a training room with spectacular views of Chicago’s skyline, the program started off with the question: “what do you think your mom or dad does at work all day?” Their curiosity was piqued when a small green pig with the words invest, spend, save and donate was brought out.

“Penny the Pig has become a perennial favorite to help introduce the concept of financial planning to young children,” noted Michelle Romano, chief financial officer. “At the same time, we want to share our firm’s philanthropic initiative to help kids and their families who are faced with childhood cancer.”

With a book in hand, Anna Gilchrist, an associate with the firm, read the children Alex and the Amazing Lemonade Stand, the true story of Alexandra “Alex” Scott and her courageous, inspiring battle against childhood cancer through a lemonade stand. The kids then made lemonade ‘to go’ kits and helped raise funds for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Of course, no day is complete without fun and an obstacle course, coin treasure hunt and a game of jeopardy followed by a make your own snack bar, which were all hits.

Perryman and Romano, along with Robert Hughes, the firm’s Chief Operating Officer worked together to launch the first Bring Your Child to Work Day in 2014. This year’s planning committee included: Lindsey Daehnke, Director of Marketing and Communications at the office of John Roland, CLU, CFP® ; Tara O’Dea, Planning Department Supervisor; Nikki Perryman, Director of Operations; Michelle Romano, Chief Financial Officer and Chuck Volpentesta, Financial Advisor.

Northwestern Mutual - Chicago Third annual charity golf outing raises $40,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

Two rain delays didn’t dampen the spirits of golfers and a team of volunteers at Northwestern Mutual – Chicago’s third annual golf outing. The charitable event held at Glen Oak Country Club in Glen Ellyn raised more than $40,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF).

“Events like this are so important for raising awareness about childhood cancer,” said Corey D. McQuade, Managing Partner.  “Knowing that cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 years old, it’s imperative we fund pediatric cancer research and support services for families battling the disease.”

The day featured a scramble format tournament, special contests including Beat the Managing Partner and lemonade stands all designed to raise money for ALSF.

The evening included a silent auction dinner and a special presentation from ALSF 2017 National Lemonade Days Hero Ambassadors Ruth Ciamarra and her daughter Anna.  The seven-year-old Lombard girl is fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) Their personal story highlighted the journey of Anna’s diagnosis, treatment, and now her own efforts to raise awareness and funds by hosting Lemonade Stands at her school and in her community.

Since 2012, Northwestern Mutual has raised more than $15 million and funded over 165,000 hours of research to fight childhood cancer. Through this golf outing, the firm will help fund an additional 800 hours of research.

“We’re grateful to our financial professionals who played in the tournament, our generous sponsors, and associates who helped plan and volunteered the day of the event,” said Amita Gupta, Marketing and Advisor Engagement Strategist, who leads the firm’s childhood cancer philanthropic initiative. “These funds will help advance research into new treatments and cures for childhood cancer,” she added.

Beyond increasing awareness and raising funds for ALFS, Northwestern Mutual – Chicago partners with the Ronald McDonald House of Chicagoland. In 2016, through the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, the firm provided a $25,000 grant to help fund local programs and services. The firm’s team members regularly volunteer at one of the five houses in Chicago providing meals and hosting family fun events. NM Chicago Athletic Leadership Award

Track is a singular sport but for Concordia University Chicago junior Chelsee Wilson it’s not a one-person show.  She says it’s with the support of her coaches and teammates that she has broken several records, achieved conference titles and qualified for nationals as a sprinter for the Cougars.

When not studying and participating in sports, the Roundlake Beach resident can be found in her hometown helping senior citizens with household chores, working in the community garden and when bad weather threatens sandbagging to prevent flooding.

“Chelsee leads her life with compassion, kindness and caring for others which is a fundamental tenet of leadership,” said Thomas J. Canale, Managing Director of Northwestern Mutual – Chicago in Rosemont.  “She serves as a role model for other students and embodies the spirit of this award.”

In recognition of Chelsee’s achievements, Northwestern Mutual – Chicago will donate $500 to the Heart Smart Max Schewitz Foundation, a local non-profit that Chelsee selected to receive the grant. The organization supports education, prevention, and research of sudden cardiac death in young people.

Presenting the award in the photo is from left t right:  Richie Green, Financial Representative and College Unit Captain; Molly Martin, Director of Recruitment and Selection; Tom Canale, Managing Director; Chelsee Wilson, Concordia University Chicago student-athlete; and Madeline Mioni, Recruiting Coordinator.
